Ayurvedic Dietary Tips for Healthy Hair
Ayurveda, the 5,000-year-old system of holistic healing from India recommends proper diet for maintaining hair strength, color and luster. If you maintain healthy hair through healthy diet then you can also avoid chemical based hair care products that can further damage your hair in long run!
Healthy hair is a reflection of your well-being
Healthy hair begins within. This means that similar to skin, hair also requires nutrition from the inside out. Any hair care product with topical application won’t be effective if your diet lacks hair-friendly foods. So if you wish to keep your hair healthy then have a hard look at what you eat, when you eat and how you eat.
Hair healthy diet
Ayurveda recommends a combination of wholesome, fresh natural foods as the best and most effective way of delivering balanced nutrients to your hair. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Dark leafy vegetables, beets, broccoli, carrots, radish, and herbs like mint and basil are excellent choices for wholesome supply of nutrients to your hair. Do add spices like cumin and turmeric to your vegetable curries as they are not only hair friendly but also help transport the nutrients from other foods you eat to the cells and tissues of the body.
Different types of berries, citrus fruits, melons and sweet grapes are considered hair healthy fruits. Similarly, eating soaked raisins promote hair growth. Also, vary the fruits and vegetables you eat.
Coconut is highly revered in ayurveda for its ability to nourish the hair and scalp. It balances the pitta dosha and thereby treats premature falling of hair and graying. Coconut consumed in all its forms is beneficial for health of the hair.
Ayurveda recommends milk, fresh cottage cheese and lassi (a drink made by blending fresh yogurt and water) for proper health of hair. Also, whole grains and legumes provide nourishment to your hair without putting muchpressure your digestive system. One can also combine grains, beans, vegetables, herbs & spices and prepare hair healthy nutrients rich meals.
